KRAUTKOSH23 - UPDATE #12 Meeting a Legend

Hey,

Chris here from Military Aviation History with the twelfth update from the trip to Oshkosh 2023 you crowdfunded. Today we not only filmed a bunch of aircraft but also volunteered at the museum!

Don’t come near a Kingcobra - the bite is fierce!

Today I found myself in Rexburg, Idaho filming at the Legacy Flight Museum. It’s a smaller collection but one that packs a punch. Not only are basically all exhibits in flying condition, they are also rare and full of history. First up, I filmed three Inside the Cockpit episodes:

  • P-63 Kingcobra

  • S-2F Tracker

  • P-51D-25

The Kingcobra especially is a looker. As one of the only surviving P-63s, and in flying condition, this is one aircraft to behold. With her unorthodox engine and cockpit layout, this is one episode you can not miss!

Sitting in the fastest Mustang coast-to-coast

After filming, we noticed that some of the other volunteers at the museum were cleaning some of the exhibits. Always up for some action, we joined in and helped with dusting and moving around some thing. We didn’t know it at the time but we were about to get rewarded: “Ole Yeller” was coming in. What’s “Ole Yeller”? That would be a legendary racer P-51 flown by the venerable Bob Hoover. Now owned by John Bagley, “Ole Yeller” is based in Rexburg! After scrubbing her off - she was marking a lot of territory with her oil - we got to sit inside. This is a plane that still holds the standing piston engine speed record of 1985 with the fastest coast-to-coast (US) transit of 5h20min! Talk about aviation legacy! I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to sit in her, thank you to the team at the Legacy Flight Museum!

Big thank you to all of you for supporting this project!

Chris
