KRAUTKOSH23 - UPDATE #19 - Air-to-Air Combat

Hey,

Chris here from Military Aviation History with the nineteenth update from the trip to Oshkosh 2023 you crowdfunded. Today you get in on the story of how an American aviation legend got his first air-to-air kill!

Gen (ret.) Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson explains his first air-to-air kill

One of the great things at Oshkosh was the warbirds section with ongoing presentations on World War 2 and Cold War aviation. General (ret.) “Bud” Anderson has - I am told - been a constant during these throughout the last years. No mean feat, he is 101 years old! After opening up this year with an introduction about a new snazzy documentary movie about “Bud’s" WW2 experience, the General himself explains his very first air-to-air kill.

Top scoring fighter aces of the 357th Fighter Group. L-R; Richard Peterson, Leonard Carson, John England (Bud refers to him in the talk), and Clarence “Bud”Anderson.

Listen to Anderson reminisce about the pressure of being a senior fighter pilot with (initially) no fighter kills, the resulting self-doubt, and finally his spectacular high-angle deflection shot that took care of a Bf 109 on Feb 20, 1944. Bud would then go on to end his WW2 flying with 16 ¼ victories, becoming a celebrated and highly decorated USAF pilot and test pilot in the Cold War.
